North Beach Family Photography Session

It's summer! and I don't know about you but I have one thing on my mind - the beach! Sunshine, sand, and waves. That'd make me a happy girl - and an even happier photographer! Add to the mix a crazy beautiful family with just about the cutest toddler. Okay, did you see his perfect little hair do? This family photography session doubled as a maternity session; pretty sure the new little one is going to enjoy being soaked in sunshine.

Let me tell you a little secret - beaches are amazing (you already knew that!) but finding a location that has heart and meaning for you makes an incredible difference in your photography session. It is like sweet memories is incorporated into all your images. For this family it brought back memories of childhood adventures on the beach, seashell collections, and jumping waves; it also brought back memories of falling in love and dreaming of a family together.

Alright, alright, I will stop talking about meaningful places for your photography session and let you enjoy this beautiful gallery!

Five Favorite Locations for Family Photos

Ontario is incredible - rich with diversity and beauty. There are so many places that I have come to know and love - and countless more for me to explore! I am sure that you have your own nuggets of Ontario that have special meaning to you and your family; ones that carry dear memories, where you can almost hear the giggles, and you think of escaping to when life feels a bit overwhelming. Here are some of my favorites. I would love to hear what yours are!

  1. North Beach Provincial Park: this is a little gem tucked away in Prince Edward not too far from Belleville. Some people refer to it as the little sister of Sandbanks. It’s so beautiful with it’s paved walking trail, long sandy beaches and space to run and play. The little ones are always addicted to the waves coming in and tickling their feet, the seashells they find, and the rocks to toss into the water.

  2. Grills Apple Orchard - Belleville: While this is seasonal (those sweet little blossoms! And later those fresh crunchy apples I’m craving!) it has to be one of the best places to do a family session. The long rows lend such beautiful symmetry to your images, and kids love racing each other down the paths and peeking through the trees giggling at each other. During apple picking season it’s always nice to end the session with a healthy treat picked straight off the tree. Another little bonus is the playground they have on-site; can’t get much better for the little ones!

  3.  O’ Hara Mills Homestead and Conservation Area - Madoc: This one is a bit of a drive but so worth it. It offers almost everything one could dream of! Gorgeous old buildings, a waterfall, a covered bridge, open fields, and well-maintained walking paths winding through the forested area. Often clients decide to hang out after their session, go on a hike, or just enjoy the beauty of the scenery.

  4. Your Home: Seriously, a lot of magic can happen with the walls of your own home and your backyard. There is something very special about capturing your family where you have built and grown your family and experienced so much love and laughter together. Those images are rich with added memories of walls and furniture your children recognize and love.

  5. Riverside Park - Belleville: I love this park! It has really gorgeous paved walking trails, little forested areas, some pretty floral displays and open fields. Lots of variety for your images. It also boasts a picnic area, splash pad and park for the kids to unwind after their session (or incorporate into their session!).

I love photographing families in Belleville - well just about anywhere! I am always up for an adventure, to see new places, and to hear about the wonderful memories you have created. I also can't wait to introduce you to new places and watch you discover areas you can fall in love with.

How to Incorporate Heirlooms into your Photos - Belleville Family Photographer

Now before you don’t think this little post is for you - I don’t mean the fancy china your great aunt Matilda gave you or the delicate figurines your grandmother passed on to you for safekeeping. I’m talking about the pieces of your life that have incredible value and meaning to you. Pieces that have been slowly added and are attached to dear memories. Some of my favorites items I have sees brought to their family photography sessions:

A quilt you so lovingly stitched for your new baby

Your toddlers lovey or teddy they can’t sleep without

A special book you often snuggle and read with your kids

A special necklace handed down to you

A favorite flower your loved one gives you on special occasions

a vintage truck loving restored

Items that give meaning, items that speak to who your family are, those pieces make your portraits even more special. They are so easy to incorporate - your job is simply to bring them along! My job is to find ways to tuck those heirlooms into the images! It is so simple because they are often already a part of who you are. Babies are snuggled in special quilts or allowed to roll around, toddlers cuddle their meaningful teddys, you all cuddle onto the bed or snuggle onto each others laps and pull out the favorite book, you hold the flower between you and breathe in the memories.

What are some of your special heirlooms that you would want to see in your images?

How to Prepare for Your Maternity Session

Congratulations! Pregnancy is such a beautiful time full of dreams, little kicks and turns, and an exciting future ahead. It can also be hard, exhausting, and you don’t always feel your best or your prettiest. But remember - pregnancy is beautiful, you have that amazing glow, and your body is doing something amazing - new life is growing inside you.

Location: Sit back, close your eyes for a minute and imagine your session - where do you want to be? A gorgeous open field? The beach with the sand squishing between your toes? A favorite park with a forest close by? An urban feel? Or maybe it’s the comfort of your own home. Start with what you want the backdrop of your images to be; when you know the landscape you want it’s as simple as picking the spot.

Belleville, Kingston, Cobourg and all the surrounding areas have so many gorgeous locations and conservation areas we can easily find something to suit your vision.

Who is included in the session: The focus of a maternity session is you and the beauty growing inside of you; but we also want to celebrate Dad -  his love and pride for his coming baby and any siblings who are eager for this new joy to enter their world.

Wardrobe:  Pregnancy is such a special time - and you are a beautiful (even if you don’t feel like it). I always suggest moms - to - be to stop and enjoy this bit of time to pamper yourself and celebrate. These are images that you will look back on and cherish. Spend time doing your hair and makeup you love. Select clothing that makes you feel like the queen you are. Flowing dresses are incredible flattering and look amazing with a baby bump but your personal style is important to incorporate into the shoot. Choose your outfit first and coordinate any other outfits around yours. It’s your day - let’s celebrate what you are creating!

How to Prepare for your Newborn Session

What better way to welcome your sweet newborn into the world than capturing the awe and love of your family towards this little person who has entered your home and captured your heart? Welcome sweet one, welcome.

My newborn style of photography is a relaxed approach capturing your little in their new environment. Typical places I shoot is the master bedroom, nursery, and a corner of the living room. When I arrive I will scout around your home looking for where the natural light falls the best and will utilize those spaces.

Day of the Session: As a new parent you’re going to feel exhausted, bursting with joy, some lows, and exhausted (yes, that deserves mentioning twice). So I want you to relax before your session - don’t go on a mad cleaning rampage, we can easily quickly pick up the areas we are going to use for your session. Take your time getting ready - and if you would like, I will bring a hair and makeup stylist for you Mom. You just went through a lot, you deserve a little pampering!

Sessions usually take place mid morning when the sun is bathing your home in gorgeous natural light.

Your Baby: You and I both know - babies are perfect just the way they are; which is why I don’t do any significant posing or props. I let baby guide the session, capture their little personality -  whether asleep or awake - and all of the tiny little details. (Little baby toes!!). I recommend feeding baby about 15 minutes prior to the session which will help them feel contented; but don’t worry, we can take lots of breaks. Dress your baby in a form fitting white onsie without any graphics or sayings and have a few favorite swaddling blankets around to tuck around your little one.

Siblings: I start the session by capturing images of the family together with the new baby while the session is interesting and exciting for your other children. Let your children know that a friend is coming to take pictures of them and their new baby - let them know how excited you are and that it will be a fun time. We will spend time cuddling baby and capturing meaningful images of the family with your new arrival.

Mom and Dad: Having a new little baby can be a wonderful experience, but it can also be hard. Mom and Dad - your job is to relax and enjoy your baby. Breathe in these little moments, sweet smells, and just enjoying being yourselves.

Wardrobe: Neutral and comfortable; coordinated but not matching. Mom, dress yourself in something you love and feel comfortable in and from there select the children’s and hubby’s outfit based on your outfit. If you need any help I am always on stand by - feel free to send me a message with pictures of outfits and I can help you pick the right pieces!
